What To Do If You Suspect a Gas Leak

July 13, 2022 – ,

Propane is a safe and efficient fuel for home heating and comfort systems. But it’s important to be aware of how to operate your propane equipment safely to avoid any accidents.

The two most important things to know are how to detect a leak and what to do if you have one.

How do I know if I have a propane gas leak?

Propane has a strong smell of rotten eggs, which helps notify you if there’s a leak. This is added artificially as a safety precaution by manufacturers — in its natural state, propane is odorless.

However, if you suffer from a cold or allergies and can’t smell the odor, we recommend installing a propane gas detector in your home. It’s a good idea to install carbon monoxide detectors as well.

If I have a propane leak, what do I do?

If you smell gas:

  • Do not operate any electrical devices or appliances, and leave the house immediately.
  • Once you’re a safe distance from your home, call 911.
  • Keep hands away from all light switches, electrical outlets, or ignition sources as you leave.
  • Before using your propane equipment again, make sure to have it serviced and checked.
