5 Things to Think about When Choosing a Propane Patio Heater

Getting a propane patio heater can extend the life of your open-air get-togethers.

Propane patio heaters can help keep the party going outside well into the fall–and can help it start earlier in the Spring. But what do you need to consider if you’re shopping for one? Here’s a quick guide.

  1. Size, power, and heating area : The three most important features to consider when choosing a patio heater are its physical size, its power (measured in BTUs) and the heating diameter it “throws.” Heating diameter can vary quite a bit depending on the brand and style of heater–make sure you choose a unit that will cover the area you need to heat.
  2. Mounting type : Propane patio heaters can be wall-mounted, tabletop or freestanding. Tabletop heaters stand about four feet high; freestanding heaters range between seven and nine feet high. One way to help decide between a tabletop and a freestanding heater is to consider whether you would prefer to manage a cylinder (freestanding) or a disposable (tabletop) propane canister.
  3. Safety features : The most popular safeguard built into a patio heater is anti-tip feature, which automatically shuts off the heater if it’s tipped past a certain angle. Choose a unit that contains at least this feature. Other safety features to look for include an oxygen depletion sensor (ODS) and an overfill protection device (OPD).
  4. Fuel efficiency : Find your heater’s AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating (think of it like MPG for your car–the better the rating, the more energy efficient the appliance is). A higher AFUE rating will mean lower bills for you.
  5. Style and other features : Many styles of patio heater are available–from modern stainless models to classic brushed copper and enamel painted options. Other style considerations include portable vs. stationary (with or without wheels) and design or shape.

Thank you for these tips; I’ll make sure to consider the patio heater’s physical size, power, and heating diametr before making any purchases. Well, you’re also right that it would be best to check its annual fuel utilization efficiency.

  2. My boss is looking for advice on how to warm his patio during cold evenings so that he’d be able to enjoy it. I had no clue that a propane patio heater exists, and it’s also made to be efficient in consuming its fuel. I should recommend this to my boss so he could use it for his party next weekend.

  3. I actually have some fans on a Facebook page related to this stuff. I’ll share your post of Patios with them and see what they have to say. I’m sure they’ll love it though.
